The Tucson Museum of Art and History Block is located at 140 N. Main Ave. This block comprises of five historic buildings which are considered of enough significance to be included in the National Register of Historic Places. At this location, visitors can see Casa Cordova, the Stevens Home and the J. Knox Corbett House. One home that is not open to the public is The Romero House. This is thought to contain a section of the presidio wall. The museum itself is the only modern building in the complex. It has some interesting design features though, like the fifteen-foot beamed ceilings and the saguaro cactus-rib supports! In its centre, is the Plaza of the Pioneers, an exhibit in memory of the early settlers in Tuscon. Housed here also is a permanent collection of modern art as well as some fascinating travelling shows, as well as some permanent exhibits of Western art. Free tours of the museum can be arranged, or visitors can obtain a self-guide tour map and explore by themselves. Opening hours are Monday-Saturday 1000-1600hrs, and Sunday 1200-1600hrs. The guided tours are available on Wednesdays, Thursdays & Saturdays at 1100hrs. For more information, phone 520-624-2333 |
